Star Trek Fan Film - 1971!

From the YouTube comments:

This video was a final exam in a TV production class that I took at Ohio State back in the spring of 1971. Even as a lad of 21, I always had to have everything preserved!! I had this taped on 1" open-reel videotape, then transferred it to U-Matic and then to Beta. (I got an A-.)

Spock appears to be played by Mike Nesmith (well, the guy stole his sideburns, anyway), the sets are non-existent, the humor is not really humorous, and yet it's STILL better than The New Voyages.

Bill as Falstaff - reviews!

We mentioned that Bill played Falstaff recently in a celebrity performance of Merry Wives of Windsor:

Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles presents co-chairs Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks and a rhinestone-studded roster of celebrities reading Shakespeare's bawdiest comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor for its 21st Simply Shakespeare fundraiser. Celebrity readers include Christina Applegate, Kenneth Branagh, Faith Hill, Eric Idle, Arte Johnson, Eugene Levy, Tim McGraw, William Shatner, Martin Short, Tracey Ullman. The evening also features live music from country superstar Reba McEntire, and progressive bluegrass musicians Sara and Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek.

We were hoping to find some photos or videos, but alas, there are none to be seen. We did, however, find some great reviews. Bill, naturally, killed. Here are some highlights:

What a fantastic event! Where else can you get such a diverse cast?!?! William Shatner as Falstaff...I never thought William Shatner when I think William Shakespeare, but he magically fit, pompous and pudgy!

Shatner - hillarious as Falstaff - worked his behind off, dressing as old woman, hiding in a laundry basket and getting beat up by fairies...........

Martin Short is a firework of fun and Arte Johnson, Tom Hanks, William Shatner, and Reba - the whole cast - make this the best Shakespearean comedy ever!

holy crap. i was cracking up the ENTIRE TIME. martin short, tom hanks and shatner were amazing. seriously a good time.

The principals, Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson, Tracey Ullman & Kenneth Branagh, along with William Shatner (as Falstaff) were superb, with Artie Johnson & Martin Short providing over-the-top comedy schtick.

Monday night's "Merry Wives of Windsor" reading at UCLA was one-third Shakespeare, one-third country standards sung by Reba McEntire, and one-third ad libs by Tom Hanks and Martin Short.

And just about everybody on stage at Royce Hall wore a cowboy hat, except Kenneth Branagh's Master Ford, who seemed to have wandered in from another production, if not another continent.

No one gave the word "adieu" more twang than McEntire's Margaret, prompting Hanks' Master Page to remark, "It's like she's affected half the cast with her dialect."

The show did stick to the Bard when it came to William Shatner's Falstaff, who delivered the grand finale in drag, looking like "the witch of Brentwood," as Rita Wilson's Mistress Ford put it.

"Back to Space-Con" on DVD

This looks pretty awesome! I think we'll get it and review it. From SFGate:

It was much harder to be a Bay Area science fiction geek in the early 1970s. Instead of aisles and aisles of sci-fi-themed toys and clothing in retail giants such as Target, there was one hole-in-the-wall store in Berkeley. Instead of a huge comic book convention at the Moscone Center, "Star Trek" fans gathered at Lincoln High School in San Francisco. Bay Area documentarian Tom Wyrsch, who directed the similarly nostalgic "Remembering Playland at the Beach," opens the vault again to present a loving tribute to the first science-fiction conventions in San Francisco and the East Bay. What could have been an archive dump - Wyrsch has a plethora of footage of varying quality, including interviews by "Creature Features" legend Bob Wilkins - quickly takes form, with many themes that are moving, funny and sometimes sad. Some of the fans felt extremely isolated, and were thrilled to find a convention hall filled with like-minded costume-wearing Trekkers. Bay Area fans were instrumental in convincing Hollywood that there was value to sci-fi, but that corporate mind-set eventually took over the conventions. "Space-Con" is rough around the edges at times, but still a very enjoyable time capsule for local sci-fi fans. Available for sale at www.garfieldlaneproductions.com.
