Tribbles, Acting and Shatner Butt

David Gerrold talks about Trouble with Tribbles.

Prior to this episode, we’d seen only hints that William Shatner could be a great comic actor. The giveaway moment was the storage compartment scene. I had written in the outline and the script that the tribbles fall on Kirk’s head. I had always assumed that at some point, Shatner would say, ‘This makes my character look too silly,’ and I was prepared to have him step aside just before the tribbles fell. But William Shatner has always been the consummate professional and I believe he was eager to show off his comic abilities as well. The moment when he is up to his neck in tribbles, when he gives Dr. McCoy a very annoyed look, that’s equal to any expression that Oliver Hardy ever gave to Stan Laurel at his most exasperated.

Profiles in History is auctioning off lots of Hollywood memorabilia and the auction in October has a lot of Trek stuff - including Bill's PANTS from the original series! There were of course many pairs of these pants and JK and I had the pleasure of hugging another pair, courtesy of some wonderful collectors.

Pants. Where his butt was. Where his EVE was. Pants.

I'm getting all dizzy just thinking about them.

Bill is an atheist.

From a clipping found at the wonderful site Memory Prime. This was written in 1968, shortly after Bill's father had passed away. I'll post more from it later, but this is quite interesting, esp. for 1968!

After a moment I said, "You have no religious beliefs...or hopes of an afterlife?"

Bill regarded me soberly for a moment and then he smiled, a wry little half smile. "No. I don't. Emotionally I would like to believe there is a life after death. Intellectually...I cannot accept the idea.

"We send our little daughters to Sunday school. It's important for them to have basic religious training. But as for myself, I have finally come to the conclusion that life is here and now...and nothing more."

Spoken like Captain Kirk, and like a man who always lives in the moment. I love you even more, Bill.

William Shatner's Mysteries of the Gods

"The Mysteries of the Gods" is a full length documentary portraying the ancient astronaut theories of Swiss-born researcher Erich von Däniken. The film is hosted and narrated by no less than William Shatner himself. Everything from the Peruvian Crystal Skull to the megalith structures in the jungles of Southeast Asia is accepted as evidence for the Ancient Astronaut theory. Cave drawings, old legends, Biblical stories and even some psychic visions of late Jeanne Dixon are understood as stone cold facts. Eric von Däniken's reputation was still quite unspoiled at the time so all the arguments (even the most far-fetched) are shown with a great confidence. William Shatner is-as usual-overacting his part. With all the strange "scientific" people, long shots, enthusiastic Shatner and eerie 70's synthesizer music this amazing documentary was from the day one destined to become a cult classic.
